The line "so it goes" is used whenever a person dies or a death is mentioned, basically giving a nonchalant reaction to death. "So it goes" is a famous like from Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five" about this man who basically travels through time (Tralfamadores, the aliens who abduct him, see life all at once instead of in time order like we do). "All he knows/If he can't relieve it, it grows/So it goes." I like the idea that this is about a paranoid schizophrenic. This struggle threatens to become the end of him, he hears whispers that tell him to jump… whispers from his other side? He is drowning in this fight, and losing his mind… even though his escape from the “bird” is ultimately in order to save his sanity. It is not strong, but it is the only part of the truth that he still has. His heart is still there, but only just with the help of a few safety pins. The back pack that is all that he knows, suggests how he has simplified his life to nothing more than what he can carry ( literally and figuratively). He is paranoid and anxious from the glimpses that he sees, he must keep away from the truth and pain so that he can try live. Yet this is making him feel crazy, because it is a constant battle to avoid oneself. The bird is the side of himself he is avoiding in order to survive – that person is darker and carries more pain. ? "After doing it for a while, you wish you could just put them down and play some other songs, but sometimes that is difficult when you are headlining," he said.Īllison said he's happy to be coming to Lubbock and playing the new material. He said after touring on the same material for the past three years, he's ready to let some of the older tunes rest.
Very rarely do we have an entire song put together before we start working on it."Īllison said he is glad to be back on the road, this time playing some new songs from the album.
"As we work on the song, it begins to take shape, and the next thing you know you have something to show people. "It is always different when we write a song, but most of the time it starts with a tiny idea, with the riffs and the lyrics and the melody," said Allison. When coming together to write for the record, Allison and Walser started with a small idea, and then fleshed it out with some guitar riffs and lyrics. "We had to swallow some things, and we realized the record was better with us working together than working apart," he added. "It is hard for friends to get together to do something creatively because you sometimes have a difference of opinion, but you are friends above anything else, and you can't let work get in the way. "We wrote some good music in the end, when we were able to put all of these things behind us," Allison said. They also realized they needed to write together to complete the project. They realized, however, they were friends, and that comes before the work.
Not only that, but Allison and Walser were having some trouble writing together. We had recorded the lion's share of the record, and we realized we had a little more recording budget and time, so we put together two more songs in that time, and "S.O.A.R" was one of those."Īfter recording the title track, Devour the Day realized it really encapsulated where the band members were in their lives and summarized the direction of the record.ĭuring the writing stage of the record, Allison said, the guys in the band were somewhat uninspired and distracted by the personal issues surrounding them.
"It was just a really rough time for Joey and I in our personal lives. "The record was a fairly difficult task for us, because we had outside influences that was keeping us distracted," said Allison. He said recording for the album was in its final stages when band members realized they had a little more time and a little more money.
